A rugby test at Soccer City ("The National Stadium"), John Smit's 100th
appearance, and a chance for the Boks to redeem themselves against the old foe.
So why am I struggling for excitement?

This has been a terrible campaign for the Boks. The losses in New Zealand are
somehow understandable against what is a very good All Black outfit, but losing
badly against what can only be described as a very average Wallaby side shows
that the Boks have serious problems.
On paper this is not a bad Bok side. I have my concerns about Franscois
Hougaard at 9, but anything is better than Januarie. The lack of a fetcher to
counter McCaw is also a worry. The insistence of the Bok management that they
don't need a fetcher is even more disturbing. Juan Smith will make a big
difference to the general work rate of the back row, but Burger will again be left to
compete on the ground which is not his strength.
It seems a given that the Boks will stick to last year's kick and chase game
which is baffling under the current law interpretations and against the evidence
of how this game plan failed down under. During the Super 14, the Bulls and
Stormers adapted their game plans very well so why this stubbornness from the
Bok coaches?
Pieter de Villiers and Co insist that the players in their initial squad are
good enough and refuse to look at the Currie Cup for new talent. As a result the Boks are stuck
with the likes of Butch James and Januarie on the bench, while exciting talents
like Dewaldt Duvenhage, Sarel Pretorius and Patrick Lambie carve it up in the
Currie Cup. A year out from the World Cup why not give a young game breaker a
bench opportunity? It just makes no sense.
The All Blacks on the other hand are incredibly settled and at the top of
their game. There are few, if any weaknesses.
This is a wonderful milestone for John Smit but we think it will make little
difference to the outcome. The Boks will start well but fade and sadly we
predict them to lose by seven.
