The Slovenia national football team is one of the world's
youngest international football sides because it only played its first
game in 1992. Before then, the team was part of the Yugoslavia national
football team. However, when Yugoslavia (the Socialist Federal Republic
of Yugoslavia) broke up in 1991, Slovenia finally got its independence.
And since then the Slovenia national football team has been under the
control of the Football Association of Slovenia.
While the Slovenia national football squad failed to qualify for the
1998 FIFA World Cup in France, in the 2002 World Cup hosted by South
Korea and Japan the side reached Round 1, finishing in 30th place. Two
years before that, however, the side made it to Round 1 of the UEFA
European Football Championship, which was hosted in France and Germany.
Then after failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, the Slovenia
national football team surprised many of its critics in 2009 when it
qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Matjaž Kek is the head coach of the Slovenian football team, which he
has led since 2007.
