Rugby World Cup Betting

The 2011 Rugby World Cup is the 7th time that teams from all over the world will compete for the William Webb Ellis trophy.

The current holders, our very own Springboks, won the 2007 tournament under Jake White. Much has been written about the Springboks' chances of retaining the Cup. The last four years under coach Pieter de Villiers has been a somewhat entertaining but frustrating ride for Bok fans. As the team embarks on its title defence, many question marks will remain, such as the retention of John Smit as captain ahead of arguably the best hooker in the world, Bismarck du Plessis.

Fans have been baying for blood with a recent run of poor results for the Boks, but come September 11 against Wales in Wellington, they will all no doubt be hopeful of what seems an impossible task - retaining the Cup in New Zealand.

Whilst New Zealand is an outright favourite with bookies, for experts and armchair fans (and rightly so) Australia seems to have timed their build-up very well. Coach Robbie Deans has built significant depth and has some superstars in his team. It would take a brave punter to bet against a New Zealand / Australia final.

I can't see a major challenge coming from any of the Northern Hemisphere teams. France are too erratic, England have been unconvincing under Martin Johnson, Ireland crumble when their forwards are outplayed and Wales is, well, Wales. They very rarely win big games.

But there is one significant reason why no Northern Hemisphere team will not make the final: they don't know how to win in New Zealand and to do so they would have to beat one of the Southern rivals in a semi-final and I cannot see that happening.

All in all it will no doubt be a fabulous tournament, and we present live Rugby World Cup odds and the best bookmakers where you can place your rugby bets.
