Like most countries in the America's, the central American country
Honduras is 'football mad' and boasts a national squad. Known locally
by its nickname 'Los Catrachos', the Honduras national football team
is controlled by the Federación Nacional Autónoma de
Fútbol de Honduras (FENAFUTH), which was founded in 1951.
But the Honduras national football team dates back to September 1921,
when it played its first international against neighbors, Guatemala.
The team's inexperience was evident when it was beaten 1-10. However,
since then the Honduran national football team has made its mark in
American football. In 1982 Honduras hosted and won the prestigious
CONCACAF championship (Confederation of North, Central American and
Caribbean Association Football). It also finished third in the 2009
UNCAF Nations Cup.
In terms of the FIFA World Cup, in 1982 the Honduras national football
team qualified for its first ever World Cup. And while it failed to go
further than Round 1, it did become the first Central American football
squad to score two points in a World Cup tournament. In October 2009
the Honduran national football squad qualified to the 2010 FIFA World
Cup in South Africa by beating El Salvador 1-0. This win gave Honduras
the third automatic qualifying spot from the Fourth Round of CONCACAF
Qualifying.
The head coach of the Honduras national football team is Reinaldo
Rueda, who has overseen the side since 2006.
