The Brazilian National Football team is the most successful international
football team in the history of the sport as it is the only team too have won
the coveted FIFA World Cup five times - in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and most
recently in 2002. It was also a runner up in the World Cup in 1950 and 1998.
Perhaps this is not surprising given that Brazil has always taken its soccer
very seriously. For instance, going into the 1958 World Cup (which it won) it
was the only team that brought along its own psychologist to the host country
Sweden. This was a direct result of a previous World Cup defeat suffered by
Brazil.
In the 1950 World Cup (which Brazil hosted), the Brazilian National Football
squade
reached the final against Uruguay. All Brazil needed to win the tournament was a draw, but to the
absolute disbelief of the entire Brazilian population, the
team went from 1-0 up to 2-1 down to lose the match and the World Cup.
Since exacting their revenge eight years later, Brazil has continued to be a
force to be reckoned with during each World Cup. Some of Brazil's most famous
players include the legendary Pele, who scored 77 goals for the national team
between 1957–1971. Other notable players include Carlos Alberto, Jairzinho,
Ronaldo, Cafu, Rivaldo, Zidane and Ronaldinho.
The Brazilian National Football team is managed by the Brazilian Football
Confederation (CBF), the country's official soccer governing body that was
founded in 1914.
